I have been a volunteer for Support Connection for over 10 years now and am currently the Secretary of the Board of Directors. Support Connection provides free and confidential emotional, social, and educational services to women and their families affected by ovarian, breast and other gynecological cancers. All their counselors are cancer survivors themselves which puts them in the best position to guide women through a very difficult time.
My family has been particularly affected by breast cancer. We lost my sister Mary to the disease more than 20 years ago after a courageous 5year battle. My sister Maureen is now undergoing breast cancer treatment for the second time in 10 years. I also had two aunts who battled breast cancer. Because of my family history, I’m well aware of how devastating a cancer diagnosis is for the person diagnosed and also the toll it takes on their loved ones. So it’s comforting to know that there are other people out there who are going through or have gone through the same frightening time. Once I met the caring counselors, staff, and other volunteers at Support Connection, I knew this was the right organization for me to give my time to. I see how they make such a positive impact on those who turn to them for support.
Support Connection must raise all of the funds for their year-round services, so the Support-A-Walk is a very important event!
