If you're on this page, you probably already know my story, but I'll give you the highlights anyway. Breast and ovarian cancers have affected my life since the 1960s. My mother, Lillian (Krasner) Paget died of breast cancer in 1969, at the age of 42 after a two-year battle. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 43, and my sister, Barbara (Paget) Forst was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 63, and died six years later.
I found out about Support Connection during my own journey with cancer and started volunteer work and fundraising for them ten years later when I retired. Over the years, Support Connection has provided invaluable emotional and educational support to me, my family, and my friends. When a friend or family member is diagnosed or has a setback, I call Support Connection just so I can hear a friendly voice, one who understands both what I'm experiencing as a caregiver, and what my friend or family member is experiencing. The depth and wealth of information and the understanding that Support Connection provides cannot be measured, so I "pay it forward" by fundraising so others can also get that much-needed support.
With a few exceptions, Jeff and I have participated in the annual Support-A-Walk every year since October 2008. Even when we had to miss the walk, we raised money for Support Connection so that they could continue their important mission: providing emotional, social and educational support services to women, their families and friends affected by breast and ovarian cancer.
Since the pandemic, the Support-A-Walk has taken place all over the country with the theme of “walk where we are”. Walking on Cape Cod these last few years, Jeff and I missed gathering at FDR park with the 10,000 other participants, but wherever we walk, we spend the day reflecting on those we've lost, those in the battle, and those who conquered ovarian and breast cancer.
